Population 1,512,354,
Juarez – the fifth largest city in Mexico – is located across the
border from El Paso, Texas, in the Mexican state of Chihuahua.
Separated by the Rio Grande (or Rio Bravo, as it’s known in Mexico),
Juarez and El Paso form a border metroplex area of over 2,700,000
people, the largest of its type in the world.
Due
in large part to Mexico’s free trade agreement with the USA, Juarez is
a
growing economic and industrial center. The city is home to more
than 300
maquiladoras (assembly plants), many of which are
American-owned. Juarez’s rapid economic expansion has drawn large
numbers of Mexican citizens from the country’s less prosperous southern
states. As a result, Juarez serves as a
cultural melting pot. Many of
those who live in Juarez are still emotionally and relationally rooted
in their home state.
Due to concerns related to safety, we have a
statement addressing those concerns.
